Experience Is Profitable
We get paid for our experience as well as our time. The 74-year-old
plumber was called out to fix a problem no one else could solve. The
building manager had a heating system that was installed just after
Columbus landed.
The Town Hall meeting room was so noisy because of the ancient
pipes that no one could hear the speakers. This guy was supposed to
be the best. Suffering from arthritis, he hobbled in looking a bit like
Columbo and as old as Columbus. The building manager had some
doubts about his ability based on his first impression. With no
hesitation, the veteran plumber painfully eased his way toward a joint
in the pipes on the wall. He took out a big hammer hanging from the
loop in his coveralls and sharply hit the pipe at the joint. Instantly,
the clanging and knocking noises ceased. He submitted his
bill...$250.
The building manager hit the roof! “You only spent five minutes on
the job!” The wise old plumber replied: “Yes and my bill is $250. $10
for the five minutes when I hit the pipe with my hammer and $240
for the 50 years of learning when and where to hit the pipe!”
I've learned a lot from old plumbers like this guy, probably more than I ever learned in plumbing school. I remember when I was 14 years old a really (what I would call religious) plumber that lived behind us back home came over to our house one day and asked me if I wanted a job for the summer. I had never done any plumbing before and thought that was a job for really smart people and never dreamt that I would ever be able to do this kind of work. Well, I took the job and that summer I learned more about proper workmanship than anyone ever taught me again. He also always took time to pray and I guess it stuck. Then there was Bert back in Caronport, he was an aircraft pilot in the war, man did I learn a wack of stuff from him. Today many of us don't take the time to learn from the old timers anymore and what a shame and loss that is. We are so blessed with a lineup of guys that are retired and looking for something to do and a lot of them are willing to come out to the ranch and help pass on their wisdom and skills to the next generation. That is a huge blessing. P.T.L.
Tuesday trivia: Who taught Moses to be a shepherd ? He also got a full time job with this guy. I think there was a bit more to this but that's basically it.
SO TODAY WHY NOT GET FIRED UP AND GO FOR IT AND HELP US MAKE A DIFFERENCE?
